Australia-wide freight network

Darwin to Katherine Road Freight

Katherine is the Top End's crossroads. Three highways meet here: the Stuart running north to Darwin and south to Alice Springs, and the Victoria Highway heading west toward Kununurra and the Kimberley. At 320 km from Darwin it is a short run, but a lot of what we deliver here does not stay, because Katherine supplies a region far larger than the town itself. Ozcoast Logistics runs the corridor daily in both directions, and same-day is achievable when the timing matters.

The Darwin to Katherine corridor

This is the shortest lane we run in the Territory and one of the most straightforward. Freight leaves Darwin south on the Stuart Highway through Noonamah, Adelaide River and Pine Creek, reaching Katherine in around four hours of driving. Sealed the whole way, no border, nothing complicated about the road itself.

What makes Katherine interesting is its position rather than its size. It sits where the Victoria Highway meets the Stuart, which makes it the junction for freight heading west into the Kimberley and south toward Alice Springs. Freight bound for Timber Creek, Kununurra and beyond passes through here, and so does anything heading down the Track. A delivery to Katherine is often a staging point rather than a final destination, and knowing which one yours is changes how the load should be built.

The town also serves a genuinely large region on its own account. The cattle country around it runs to substantial stations, there is horticulture along the river, a defence presence at Tindal, and a network of remote communities that draw supply through the town. That mix means the freight is varied: station requirements, groceries and chilled product, building materials, fuel and consumables, and the general supply of a regional centre.

The wet season is the thing to plan around. From roughly November to April, monsoon rain affects the Top End, and while the Stuart between Darwin and Katherine is a good sealed road, the tracks and secondary roads out to stations and communities are far more vulnerable and can be impassable for weeks. If your freight is going beyond the highway, that timing matters a great deal and is worth discussing before you book.

Because the run is short and frequent, part loads move quickly, so you pay for the space you use and rarely wait. Full loads and urgent freight go on a dedicated vehicle, same day where it matters. One coordinator handles your job start to finish, with a direct line.

Where Three Highways Meet

Why freight to Katherine is often freight through Katherine

Katherine is a town of modest size doing the work of a much larger one, and the reason is the road layout.

The Stuart Highway runs through it north to Darwin and south to Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. The Victoria Highway heads west from here toward Timber Creek, the border and on to Kununurra and the Kimberley. That makes Katherine the junction for the entire western Top End, and freight heading anywhere in that direction comes through rather than around.

The practical consequence is that a good share of what arrives here is broken down, consolidated or transferred rather than delivered and finished. A consignment landing at a Katherine depot may be heading out to a station three hours west the same week, or south down the Track, or into a remote community off the highway.

That changes how a load should be built. Freight arriving as a single palletised consignment may need to leave as three separate ones, and it is far easier to plan that in Darwin than to sort it out at the far end. If several loads make up one job, the order they arrive in usually matters too.

So tell us the real final destination when you book, not just the town. If your freight is going beyond Katherine, we can plan the run to suit the onward leg, carry on where the road allows, or stage it so the next movement is straightforward. Any of those beats dropping it and leaving the sequencing to somebody else.

Frequently asked questions

How long does freight take from Darwin to Katherine?
Same day or next business day. It is 320 km straight down the Stuart Highway, around four hours of driving on good sealed road, so the transit is rarely the constraint. What decides it is your collection time and whether the receiver can take the freight when we arrive. Tell us both when you book and we will confirm whether same-day is realistic rather than promising it and sorting it out afterwards.
Can you deliver beyond Katherine?
Yes, and a good share of what we carry here is heading somewhere else. West on the Victoria Highway toward Timber Creek, the border and Kununurra. South on the Stuart toward Mataranka, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. Or off the highway to stations and communities. We deliver along those routes and we can stage freight in Katherine for an onward leg. Tell us the real final destination at booking rather than just the town.
Can you deliver to a station or remote community?
Yes, and it needs a conversation before we load rather than after. Properties and communities off the highway have their own access tracks, gate arrangements and unloading capability, and not every combination can reach every place. Tell us the property or community name, the access route and what is available at the other end for unloading. We will confirm what can reach you and where the sensible handover point sits if it cannot.
Does the wet season affect this run?
The highway itself holds up well. The Stuart between Darwin and Katherine is a good sealed road and it stays open through most of the wet, though heavy rain can slow things and major events do occasionally cut it. What changes far more is everything beyond the highway: the tracks out to stations and communities can be impassable for weeks rather than days between roughly November and April. If your freight is going off the sealed road, that timing matters enormously and is worth discussing before you book.
Do you carry freight from Katherine back to Darwin?
Yes, daily. Pastoral product, horticultural produce from along the river, equipment heading north for repair, and general returns all travel back. Because the lane runs loaded in both directions it is efficient to operate, and that shows up in the price of your southbound freight. If you have a load heading north, mention it at quote stage.
Can you hold temperature on this run?
Yes, and the short distance genuinely helps. Four hours is a manageable cold chain even through the build-up, when overnight temperatures stay high and a longer run would be a real test of equipment. Groceries and chilled product are also critical freight in a town where there is no alternative supplier down the road. Tell us the product, the set temperature and the delivery window at booking.
How is a short run like this priced?
On the space and weight you use rather than on distance, because at 320 km the kilometres are a modest part of the cost. Send pallet count, dimensions, weight and whether it stacks, and you will get an itemised quote with no obligation. Part loads work well here because the lane runs frequently, so you share a trailer rather than paying for one you cannot fill.
Can you move oversize loads to Katherine?
Yes, on permit, and because the run stays entirely within the Northern Territory the approvals are more straightforward than an interstate movement. Farm and industrial machinery, over-width gear and heavy plant all move on this corridor. Send dimensions, mass and any lift requirements early. If the load is continuing west or south afterwards, tell us that too, because the onward route can affect what is achievable.
Do you carry dangerous goods on this lane?
Yes, for approved classes, with the documentation, segregation and placarding each load requires, including the fuels and chemicals that stations and remote operations run on. Give us the UN number, class and packing group at quote stage rather than after the booking. Some classes can share a deck and some cannot, and that decides whether your freight travels as a part load or needs its own vehicle.
