Hobart to Launceston Road Freight

Freight leaves Hobart on the Midland Highway and runs almost due north through Brighton, Oatlands, Ross, Campbell Town and Perth into Launceston. Two hundred kilometres of good highway, no complications, and around two and a half hours behind the wheel.

That short distance changes the character of the lane entirely. Businesses at both ends treat the other city as part of their own market rather than as an interstate destination, and the freight follows that pattern: frequent, in both directions, and often same-day. Both ends are genuine commercial markets, which is what distinguishes this from the coastal runs. Hobart carries the government, services and port activity of a capital. Launceston is the northern commercial centre, with manufacturing, food processing, education and a substantial regional catchment behind it in the Tamar valley and the northern midlands. Neither is simply supplying the other, so the lane runs loaded both ways rather than having a heavy direction and an empty return.

The Midland Highway itself is the state's main road and it carries the bulk of Tasmania's intrastate freight. It is straightforward driving, though the midlands section is open country where winter fog and frost can slow early starts, and there are sections where overtaking is limited.
