Sydney to Wollongong Road Freight
Wollongong is a steel city with an escarpment behind it and a working port in front, and the freight reflects that. Alongside the retail stock and building materials any city needs, this lane carries coil, plate, fabricated steel, industrial consumables and heavy plant. It is only 85 km from Sydney, but the descent of Mount Ousley sits in the middle of it, and on heavy freight that matters more than the distance does.

The Sydney to Wollongong corridor
Freight leaves the Sydney metropolitan area on the M1 and runs south through the southern suburbs to the top of the escarpment, then descends Mount Ousley into Wollongong. Around 85 km and roughly an hour and a quarter of driving, which makes same-day delivery routine rather than an arrangement.
Mount Ousley is the part of this run that needs respecting. It is a steep descent off the escarpment, heavy vehicles travel under specific speed and lane restrictions, and it has a long history of incidents involving trucks that were too heavy, too fast or improperly restrained. For general palletised freight it is simply a careful drive. For dense industrial loads it decides the vehicle, the gearing and the restraint, and those decisions are made in Sydney rather than at the top of the hill.
What sits at the bottom is one of the country's few remaining heavy industrial centres. Port Kembla operates an integrated steelworks alongside a working bulk port, and around them sits fabrication, engineering, hydraulics, electrical and the supply chain that keeps it all running. Coil, plate and sections move in volume, and so do the consumables, spares and componentry the operations consume.
That makes weight the usual constraint rather than width. Steel products are dense, and a load can sit comfortably within legal dimensions while running well over standard mass. It is why we ask for tonnage as early as dimensions, and why the descent and the load are considered together rather than separately.
Around the industrial base sits a city of nearly three hundred thousand across the Illawarra, with a university, a growing commercial sector and steady residential construction. Retail and grocery replenishment, building materials and general commercial freight all travel this corridor constantly.
Freight runs full in both directions. Fabricated product, manufactured goods and equipment heading north for repair keep the return leg busy.
Because the lane is short and frequent, part loads move quickly. Full loads and urgent freight go on a dedicated vehicle, same day where it matters. One coordinator handles your job start to finish, with a direct line.

Eighty-Five Kilometres and One Mountain
Why Mount Ousley decides how heavy freight travels
This is the shortest lane we run out of Sydney, and the only one where a single kilometre of road shapes the whole job.
Mount Ousley drops off the Illawarra escarpment into Wollongong. It is steep, it is sustained, and heavy vehicles travel it under specific speed and lane restrictions for good reason. The incident history involving trucks on that descent is public and sobering, and almost all of it comes down to the same causes: too much weight, too much speed, or a load that moved.
For general palletised freight none of this is dramatic. It is a careful drive on a road the drivers know.
For dense industrial freight it changes the decisions made before the truck leaves. Steel coil, plate and sections are heavy in a small footprint, and a load that is legal on width can still be well over standard mass. That affects the trailer, the braking capacity, the gearing and the restraint, and all of it needs settling in Sydney rather than discovered at the top of the hill.
So we ask for the tonnage as early as we ask for the dimensions, and on heavy loads we would rather have a short conversation about what is actually being moved than take a booking on an estimate.
The same applies at the other end. Industrial and port sites around Port Kembla commonly require inductions, booked entry times and a specific delivery point inside the gate, and the lift arrangements decide how the load is built. A crated item that loads easily in Sydney still has to come off down there.

What we carry on this route
This lane carries heavy industrial freight alongside everything a city of the Illawarra's size needs. These are what we move most often. If yours is not here, ring us, and if it is heavy, tell us the weight before the dimensions.
Steel Coil, Plate & Sections
Dense steel product to and from the Illawarra fabricators and processors. Mass is the constraint, not width.
Fabricated Components
Welded assemblies and fabricated steelwork moving in both directions between workshops.
Industrial Consumables & Engineering Supply
Bearings, hydraulics, fasteners, abrasives and workshop consumables for the industrial base.
Heavy Plant & Machinery
Plant components, castings and machinery, with lift capacity and site access confirmed before we load.
Oversize & Over-Mass Haulage
Over-dimensional and dense over-mass loads on permit, planned around the Mount Ousley descent.
Container Transport (Road Legs)
Road movement of containers to and from Port Kembla and industrial sites. Road leg only; the sea leg is not ours.
Palletised & General Freight
Standard and oversize pallets out of Western Sydney into Unanderra, Kembla Grange and the Illawarra commercial areas.
Retail & E-Commerce Stock
Store and warehouse replenishment across Wollongong, Shellharbour and the coastal suburbs.
Chilled & Temperature-Controlled
Set-temperature capacity both ways. An hour and a quarter keeps the cold chain simple.
Building & Construction Materials
Fixings, framing, cladding and site consumables for steady residential and commercial construction.
Automotive Parts & Components
Parts and components for dealers, workshops and fleet operators across the region.
Dangerous Goods
Approved classes with correct documentation, segregation and placarding, including industrial chemicals and gases.
Cars, Caravans & Trailers
Relocations, dealer transfers and vans moving between Sydney and the Illawarra. Give us dimensions and registration status.
